From amp to guitar, approximately 8-10 effects pedals are used. The following are the most important:
-Fuzz (Japan made, exact maker unknown)
-Electro Harmonix Big Muff Sustainer
-Wah-Wah (either Crybaby or Ace Tone depending on feeling)
-Tape Echo Chamber (any kind as long as it is tape-based)
These four comprise the main setup, which is then connected to various effects such as phaser or ring modulator. None of these pedals are their recent, more compact revisions. Two fuzz pedals are sometimes connected in series but rarely used at the same time.
In the event of using two or more fuzz pedals simultaneously (I have used more, of course), the sound is certainly stretched, but that significantly narrows the range of spatial mobility of the sonic width. From that point, it's just a matter of which part of the performer or listener's head catches the sound.
Naturally, the guitar and amp shape the resultant sound as well. I generally use vacuum-tube style amps.
The choice of guitar is made based on feeling, depending on the situtation and circumstances. I usually use guitars like the SG, Telecaster and others. The air is always changing, and the sounds produced respond in accordance.
That's basically it. The setup is decided on a case-by-case basis (excluding the four primary effects) to achieve an optimal sound for each venue. However, since the sound changes depending on whether it is the fuzz or the sustainer that comes immediately after the guitar, the order is not set in stone.
I should also add that I don't use guitar picks. Always fingerpicking.
